Website Alberta Association of Midwives
ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
Since 1986, the Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM) has been the professional body that represents and advocates for a passionate and professional community of midwives and the practice of midwifery in Alberta. Registered midwives deliver high-quality, safe, and cost-effective maternity care. The AAM’s mission is to promote the growth and sustainability of midwives and midwifery services. There are approximately 170 Alberta midwives attending almost 10% of births each year.
While midwives have been regulated since 1994, public funding did not begin until 2009. Since then, the AAM has experienced rapid growth and continues to see changes to the system. The AAM advocates for the growth of midwifery services and offers the support of a provincial voice.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall management and successful leadership of the AAM. The ED advances the organization’s strategic direction and oversees service delivery, including governance, financial stewardship, and operational administration, all from a foundation and lens of anti-oppression and equity. The ED provides essential organizational leadership, developing relationships with members, sector leaders, funders, government, and the broader community.

The ideal candidate will have strategic and operational abilities supplemented by advanced interpersonal, communications, financial, and member-service skills. The preferred candidate will have a master’s degree in a relevant program area or field, complimented by five (5) or more years of leadership and management experience, including reporting to a non-profit board. The preferred candidate will demonstrate knowledge in and a commitment to intersectional feminist ideals, anti-oppression, and equity, and have a passion for the organization’s mission. A combination of education, competencies, and experience will also be considered.
The salary range for this role is: $130,000 - $150,000, supplemented by a competitive total compensation package.
Alberta Association of Midwives is presently located in Calgary, Alberta; however, this position can be located on site, hybrid or fully remote (with flexibility in location across Alberta or neighboring provinces). The ED will be expected to occasionally travel, with travel expenses compensated.
